Building the dreams: engineering as a profession

Have you ever wondered who makes those giant structures, skyscrapers, dams, power plants, railroad stations and all the vital installations we see around-it is the work of civil engineers, who make the designs conceptualized in those blueprints a reality. They are the executors on the ground, making all the ideas of architects and designers into reality and giving them a concrete shape. Civil engineers are the ones who battle it out on the ground and grapple with all the issues such as ground clearance and utility lines and even co ordinate with different departments of the local government to get the structure erected. Hence, to do all these activities, civil engineers have to be good managers who have to co ordinate the efforts of all the concerned parities, contractors and sub contractors to get the structure erected.

It is indeed a herculean task to get all the manpower and resources of capital and machinery devoted to the task of getting the structure to shape up as desired and conceived by the architect. Civil engineers have to blend both creativity and technical knowhow to tackle all the daily problems encountered and manage all the resources allocated effectively and in timely completion of the project.

A civil engineer must be a doer and not just a preacher. They have to lead by example and have to lead from the front. Their job not only involves sitting in the office discussing things but also have to constantly remain on the construction site to direct things and coordinate the efforts of the people present in the construction site right from the laborers to the supervisors and other technicians. They have to ensure that manpower is being utilized properly, that the construction work is going on in the right stages and machinery and materials are being deployed in the right manner so as to get the desired results.

Architects and structural engineers also play a very important role in the erection and completion of any structure. Architect plan the design and layout of the buildings and ensure that the building is aesthetically pleasing. Architects conceive the plan of the building and bring out the integration of the various elements of the building in such a manner that it becomes functional as well as beautiful. Based on the function of the building the architects design the circulation patterns, the layout of various spaces and as well design the elevation of the building. Structural engineers are the spine of any structure that is build and they design the various structural elements of the building like beams, columns and slabs. It is on such elements that the building is supported and stands on its own. They also design the foundation of the structure and suggest its various types based on the soil conditions. They factor out the various loads the building might have to bear in its entire lifespan and design the structural elements of the building accordingly keeping in mind the factor of safety.

‘To build is a noble art’ and this saying is made true and relevant by professionals like architects, civil engineers and structural engineers amongst others. These professionals design and conceive the structure and then make sure that the design conceived is erected and the creativity and imagination gets transformed into concrete reality.
